Human Performance HQ Marine Corps Marathon Training Plan

Prepare for 26.2 miles with a structured, evidence-based Marine Corps Marathon Training Plan designed to build endurance, improve running efficiency, strengthen the body, and help you arrive at the starting line healthy and confident.

The Human Performance HQ Marine Corps Marathon Training Plan is a free 16-week marathon preparation program developed for beginner-to-intermediate runners who can already run continuously for approximately 30–45 minutes. Rather than relying on a generic mileage schedule, this plan uses time-based running prescriptions, heart-rate zones, rating of perceived exertion, progressive long runs, structured recovery, and strength training to create a more individualized training experience.

Every week provides clear daily instructions so you know exactly what to do, how long to train, and how hard each session should feel.

What Is Included in the Marine Corps Marathon Training Plan?

This 16-week program includes:

  • Easy aerobic runs

  • Recovery runs and mobility sessions

  • Fartlek workouts

  • Tempo runs

  • Marathon-pace training

  • Progressive long runs

  • Two strength-training sessions per week

  • Planned recovery weeks

  • A structured marathon taper

  • Race-week preparation

  • Hydration and fueling guidance

  • Heart-rate zone and RPE recommendations

  • A professional Excel companion workbook

The plan is divided into four progressive phases: Foundation, Aerobic Build, Marathon-Specific Training, and Peak and Taper. Each phase develops the physical qualities required to complete the Marine Corps Marathon while gradually increasing training demands.

A Time-Based Marathon Training Plan

Unlike plans that prescribe the same mileage to every runner, this Marine Corps Marathon Training Plan primarily uses training duration.

A five-mile run may take one athlete 40 minutes and another runner more than an hour. Those athletes experience different levels of physiological and mechanical stress despite completing the same distance. Time-based programming helps runners receive a more appropriate training stimulus based on their pace and current ability.

Approximate mileage is included for reference, but running time, heart-rate zone, and perceived exertion should guide each workout.

Designed for Beginner-to-Intermediate Marathon Runners

This program is best suited for runners who:

  • Can run continuously for at least 30–45 minutes

  • Currently run approximately three or more days per week

  • Have completed a 5K or 10K, although prior racing experience is not required

  • Want to complete their first marathon or improve a previous performance

  • Prefer a structured, evidence-based marathon plan

  • Want strength training incorporated into their running schedule

  • Are willing to train five to six days per week

New runners who cannot yet run continuously for 30 minutes should first complete a beginner running or 5K training program before starting this plan.

Strength Training for Marathon Performance

Many marathon plans overlook strength training. The Human Performance HQ program includes progressive resistance training to support running economy, muscular endurance, force production, core stability, and connective-tissue durability.

The strength-training appendix contains Foundation and Marathon-Specific Strength A and B sessions with recommended exercises, sets, repetitions, rest periods, and progression adjustments. Training volume is reduced during recovery and taper weeks to maintain strength without interfering with running performance.

Professional Marathon Companion Workbook

Your free download also includes the Human Performance HQ Marathon Companion Workbook, a professional Excel training resource with separate tabs for all 16 weeks.

The workbook includes:

  • Complete daily exercise prescriptions

  • Planned and actual training duration

  • Planned and actual mileage

  • Heart-rate zone and RPE targets

  • Average pace and heart-rate tracking

  • Sleep and fatigue monitoring

  • Workout completion tracking

  • Training notes

  • Strength-training references

  • Training-zone guidance

  • Gear tracking

  • Race-week preparation

This allows you to keep the program on your desktop, record training data, monitor recovery, and organize your complete Marine Corps Marathon preparation in one place.
