One of the biggest misconceptions about hydration is that thirst is an early warning sign.

It is not.


Thirst is actually a lagging indicator.


By the time your brain consciously triggers thirst, your body has already started compensating for fluid imbalance through multiple physiological mechanisms.


Your body constantly regulates plasma osmolality, blood volume, sodium concentration, and fluid distribution between cells and extracellular spaces.


As dehydration develops, the body begins attempting to preserve function by releasing antidiuretic hormone (ADH), increasing fluid retention, reducing urine output, and activating thirst mechanisms, especially if dehydrated from alcohol.

Especially during the 101 days of summer for military members. Air Force members looking to pass their fitness test should make sure they hydrate appropriately during all seasons, but more so summer.
